A New Look for The CLUB The CLUB launch

WHAT'S NEW - SPRING 2012

Six Little Chicks Cover

The sun looks down on a beautiful day.

Five little chicks come out to play.

‘TO-WIT TO-WOO, watch out!’ cries Owl.

‘The big bad fox is on the prowl.’

Can five little chicks and one little stick

Stop the fox from taking his pick?

Busy Hen has five little chicks to look after while making sure number six - still an egg - stays warm. The last thing she needs is hairy, scary Fox sniffing about. She is frantic when the other birds warn her that her chicks are in danger, but her five little chicks are a lot braver than she realises! The rollicking rhythmic text is rammed with catchy refrains that beg to be shouted out. Children will love the repeated action words and thinking of new ways to act them out.

A New Look forThe CLUB

When I design one of my picture books I can put illustrations or type anywhere within the shape of the page, and all I need to lay it all out are a sheet of paper, a pencil and my imagination. This means that what you see in my books is fairly close to how I envisioned it in my head. The only limits to how the story appears on the page is my own imagination.

When working with computers however, my experience is that things aren’t always quite so limitless. As wonderful and enabling as they may be, computers operate under the limitations of their programming and software. I have been reminded of this fact every time I looked at the design of The CLUB because what the designer in me saw was the gap between how it looked and how I had wanted it to look.

When my site manager Mathew and I were building The CLUB (read more on this in Questions looking for Answers) there were many times when I said ‘Can you put that block of text there, can you add a colour behind that , can you make it wider?’ and all too often, to quote a line from the ‘Little Britain’ comedy series, 'The computer said No!‘ So how The CLUB looked is basically the best I could get it to look within the limitations of the software.

But that’s all going to change now because Matthew's upgraded the software and has been rebuilding the site; this has given me the opportunity to get The CLUB looking like I always wanted it to look. I will be announcing its launch soon!
